Bel Group Acquires Brainiac to Expand Functional Kids’ Snacks: TELLCAN SCIENCE Delivers Foundational Technology for Great Taste & Nutritional Value

2026-06-30

On May 6, global cheese giant Bel Group (France) announced its acquisition of Brainiac, an American functional kids’ brain-nutrition snack brand, as well as its infant food line Little Brainiac. This acquisition represents Bel’s latest strategic move to evolve from a cheese-focused enterprise into a comprehensive snack group. Following its purchase of fruit puree brand GoGo squeeZ, Bel has now stepped into the track of functional children’s snacks.

Brainiac was founded by two American fathers in 2019, inspired by a simple industry insight: most children only take in roughly 20% of the recommended daily intake of core nutrients for brain development. The brand embeds Omega-3 DHA and choline into fruit puree pouches, fruit gummies and toddler complementary foods, allowing kids to supplement nutrition while enjoying snacks. Each pouch of apple puree contains 65mg of Omega-3 DHA/EPA, equivalent to a child-sized serving of salmon, alongside 120mg choline, equal to two portions of broccoli. The brand holds U.S. patents and its products are sold across 40,000 retail outlets including Walmart and Target.

Peter McGuinness, CEO of Bel North America, closed this acquisition merely three months after taking office, viewing Brainiac as a powerful complement to GoGo squeeZ. Though both feature portable pouch packaging, Brainiac differentiates itself with brain nutrition functional claims. From Unilever’s USD 1.2 billion acquisition of gummy supplement brand Grüns to Bel’s takeover of Brainiac, the dividing line between snacks and health supplements is blurring rapidly. Consumers are seeking products that look and taste like ordinary snacks yet carry genuine nutritional benefits.

Technical Challenges of Functional Snacks: Flavor, Color and Shelf Stability

Incorporating DHA and choline into fruit-based snacks is far less straightforward than it appears. Omega-3 has an inherent fishy odor and is prone to oxidation, while choline leaves bitter lingering tastes. When these functional components are added to fruit puree pouches positioned as natural clean-label products, brands cannot mask off-notes with excessive sugar or artificial flavors. Besides, natural pigments such as anthocyanins and carotenoids in fruit and vegetable raw materials are sensitive to light and heat, tending to darken during shelf storage and hurt product visual appeal. What’s more, fruit puree and juice need to maintain stable texture under ambient temperature without delamination or sedimentation — a core selling point of Brainiac, whose goods can be consumed without refrigeration anytime.

This is exactly the area where TELLCAN SCIENCE specializes.

In terms of flavor development, Brainiac’s product line covers blended formulas with apple, strawberry, blueberry, carrot, pumpkin and other fruits and vegetables. TELLCAN SCIENCE’s carrot flavor, apple flavor, pineapple flavor, pumpkin flavor and other food essences can accurately reproduce the unique aroma of all kinds of fruits and vegetables without covering their natural original taste, while effectively masking unpleasant aftertastes brought by Omega-3, choline and other functional ingredients, so the finished products deliver pure fruit flavor.

In terms of sweetness adjustment, Brainiac sticks to a no-added-sugar formula. TELLCAN SCIENCE’s compound sweeteners CPS150 and TK-APM100A can modify sourness and bitterness from fruits, vegetables and functional components without adding extra calories, delivering natural, unobtrusive sweetness on the palate.

For color retention, natural pigments in fruit and vegetable purees are highly susceptible to oxidative darkening during production and storage. TELLCAN SCIENCE’s antioxidant TKH01 can slow pigment degradation, keeping products bright and vivid from production to opening — a critical advantage for children snacks marketed around natural fruits and vegetables.

In preservation, Brainiac’s shelf-stable fruit purees and juices require stable quality over a 6–12 month shelf life. TELLCAN SCIENCE’s preservative TKB01 mildly inhibits microbial growth without over-reliance on chemical preservatives, extending product stability without interfering with flavor and mouthfeel.

From Supplements to Snacks: The Last Mile of Functional Food

Brainiac has hit on a smart business logic: moving DHA from supplement shelves to snack aisles. Parents no longer need to urge children to take fish oil capsules, as kids gain nutrition from a pouch of fruit puree effortlessly. To realize such effortless nutritional supplementation, brands need to satisfy three requirements at once: palatable enough for kids to accept, clean formulas trusted by parents, and stable quality that can stand long shelf life.
